Speaker: Grant S. Hamilton, III, M.D. – Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Grant S. Hamilton III, MD, FACS, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in industrial design from the University of Illinois and was recognized as the outstanding senior in the program at graduation. He then worked at Hirano Design International, Inc, as the head of Three- Dimensional Design in the Chicago office. After working a few years as an industrial designer, he applied to medical school and ultimately earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed a 1-year internship in general surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, and a residency in the Department of Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During a fellowship in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he began to combine his interest in art, design, and craft with medicine and surgery. From 2005 to July 2011, Dr. Hamilton was on staff in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he served as director of the residency program, overseeing the largest otolaryngology residency program in the country, and was recognized for excellence in teaching within the department and the institution.

In July 2011, Dr. Hamilton joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology as the chair of the Division of Facial Plastic Surgery. He is actively involved in educating medical students, residents, and fellows in both otolaryngology and plastic surgery. He was appointed interim residency program director from July 2013 to October 2013 and received the Educator of the Year Award in 2015. His facial plastic surgery practice emphasizes procedures that involve the nose (rhinoplasty) especially challenging secondary operations. Dr. Hamilton is frequently invited to teach at other institutions and has given over 240 national and international lectures.

Dr. Hamilton is also interested in photography, and his photographs have appeared in group and solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe. His documentary about instant photography, Time Zero, premiered in 2012 and won multiple awards on the festival circuit. It is now available on several video-on-demand platforms.

Dr. Hamilton’s presentation, “Form Is Function,” will introduce attendees to a perspective on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery beyond what is typically offered in the media. This perspective is rooted in compassion and empathy to provide a deeper understanding of the function of appearance–specifically that of the face–and its role in identity and its contribution to much of what makes us human. Although based on scientific studies, this presentation will use nonmedical language and concepts to make it accessible to a wide audience.
