Lecture: The Golden Eagle Project: A Survey of Winter Population

When:  Apr 17, 2018 from 19:30 to 20:30 (CT)

Lecturer: Scott Mehus

Scott Mehus is director of education at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, and Codirector of the Golden Eagle Project, a partnership to study wintering golden eagles in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Scott has worked for the National Eagle Center for 11 years, but he has watched and studied golden eagles in Minnesota and Wisconsin for over 21 years. He has a degree in environmental interpretation and a degree in recreation and leisure studies. Passionate about the natural world, Scott enjoys sharing his knowledge with audiences of all ages.

The National Eagle Center is a world-class interpretive center located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The center is home to nonreleasable bald eagles and golden eagles, providing visitors with a close-up experience with these magnificent creatures. The Upper Mississippi River Valley is home to hundreds of nesting bald eagles. In addition, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to this region in winter because portions of the Mississippi River remain free of ice around Wabasha.

During this lecture, Scott will discuss the more elusive golden eagles that also winter in this region and the Golden Eagle Project. This project is a partnership of the National Eagle Center and Audubon Minnesota, with participation from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund provides funding support. The aims of the Golden Eagle Project are the following:

  1. To understand habitat needs and prey requirements of golden eagles in the of southeastern

Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and northeastern Iowa

  1. To determine breeding origins and migration patterns for this population of golden eagles
  2. To educate the public about golden eagles
  3. To encourage conservation of critical habitats in the region
