Pasteur’s Quadrant: Perspectives for Aspiring Inventors

When:  Jan 21, 2020 from 19:30 to 20:30 (CT)

Mayo Clinic, Phillips Hall, Siebens Building

Richard L. Ehman, MD, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics at the University of Saskatchewan.  Fascinated by opportunities at the intersection of the physical and life sciences, he pursued an MD degree at the University of Saskatchewan and completed a residency in diagnostic imaging at the University of Calgary and a research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.  He joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic Department of Radiology in 1985.

Dr Ehman was involved in the early development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and with colleagues, he introduced physics-based improvements that are now used in almost every MRI examination.  He and his team developed an  MRI-based diagnostic technology, called magnetic resonance elastography, that is now used clinically at more than 1,500 locations around the world.  Dr. Ehman, an inventor, has more than 100 US and foreign patents.  He serves as CEO of Resoundant, Inc, a Mayo Clinic-owned company.  He is a Professor of Radiology at Mayo Clinic, an emeritus member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Ehman’s presentation will focus on the importance of inventions in scientific progress and the concept of Pasteur’s quadrant. Historical perspectives on medical patents and entrepreneurship will be illustrated.  Attendees will be introduced to a collection of tips and strategies for aspiring medical inventors that Dr. Ehman has collected in discussions with prolific and successful inventors.
