William L. Lanier Jr, MD, received the Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Georgia and the Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia. After completing a residency in anesthesiology at Wake Forest University (1980-1983), he received subspecialty training in neurosurgical anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic. He was appointed to the Mayo Clinic faculty in 1984 and by 1995 had attained the rank of Professor of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Lanier’s scholarly interests involve neurosurgical anesthesiology, ischemic brain disease, and the integrity of medical publishing. He has been an author or coauthor of approximately 200 publications, including more than 90 indexed original articles. He has been a visiting professor on more than 65 occasions. In 1993 and 1994, he was president of the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesia and Critical Care (SNACC). In 2011, he was named SNACC Teacher of the Year, and in 2014, he received the SNACC Distinguished Service Award. He has been a scientific reviewer or consultant for more than 30 indexed scientific journals and has helped launch 3 biomedical journals. From 2009 through 2015, he was director of the Council of Science Editors’ Short Course for Editors, and he was given the Council’s Distinguished Service Award in 2015. From January 1999 to early 2017, he was editor-in-chief of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which has the third largest circulation among all scholarly medical journals. He lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on peer review and the integrity of the biomedical literature.

Dr. Lanier’s presentation, “Author Misconduct: An Editor’s Perspective,” will discuss the common forms of author misconduct related to biomedical journals. He will then review the methods that journals (and others) use to identify misconduct and the consequences for authors when misconduct has been discovered.
