    Hi all,

I'm sorry to say, I haven't had any nominations or reviews of the bylaws and we only have two weeks left in the open period.

Sorry to pester you all, but we need a bit of engagement (a few hours a month) to get things moving again with the Alaska Chapter. I should have a few relevant shared lectures and possible events next academic year if we can get a few volunteers. If we are not able to elect a few members, we won't be in good standing and won't be able to access the funds.

I hope to hear from some of you soon. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Kelly

Nomination period & submit edits to bylaws: May 2 - June 7
    Election & vote about bylaws: June 10 - 27
Submit results to international Sigma Xi & announce to the community: June 28

    Positions:
    • President
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer (we don't have an account)
    • Director at Large (specify city, region, university, agency, etc.).

    Dear Kelly,

Just wanted you to know that I am sympathetic to your problem but doubt that I can help other than to provide moral support. I've been retired for more than ten years and thus no longer connected to any of the institutions at which I enjoyed my membership in Sigma Xi. A very brief synopsis of my history follows.

In 1963 I was elected to membership as a Sigma Xi Associate while a graduate student at Washington State University. To best of my recollection I was elevated to full membership while on Civil Engineering faculty at University of Massachusetts Amherst, 1967-1976. From 1976 to 1980, I was a full professor of Marine Science at University of Alaska Fairbanks from which position I left to become an environmental consultant with an international engineering firm for the remainder of my professional career. From 1981 until 1993 I was an Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Alaska Anchorage. I remain associated with UAA as a member of the College of Engineering Dean's Advisory Board.

My current Sigma Xi membership is "Emeritus." If you feel that I might be helpful, please let me know. However, please understand that I am not interested in being involved in anything other than an advisory role but, be assured, that I support the mission of Sigma Xi and that I'm eager to support it however I might.

    Very kind regards,
    Jack Colonell

    Hi again,

I've delayed the start of the election period (was supposed to start last Monday, June 10), as I only have 1 possible volunteer.  At this point, we do not have enough interested people to reactivate the Alaska Chapter of Sigma Xi.

If I can find one or two more people to participate on the board, I will get the election and bylaw vote sent out before the end of the week.

I will solicit in other ways for potential executive/board members (this is an FYI as many of you may see my other posts/requests).  I've heard back from at least one person I blindly emailed who said they didn't know what Sigma Xi is - if you are getting this, you are a member.

Please reach out if you have any questions, suggestions, ideas, or concerns.

    Thanks,
    Kelly

    Kelly:

I could volunteer for the Board, depending on whether I qualify and whether it would require me to have in-person meetings or activities.  I am retired from UAF, and I am not sure if you need people who are active researchers?  Also, I am a caregiver and can't usually leave the house, although I can Zoom, etc.  No worries if you can find someone better.
