  • Re-energizing Sigma Xi Chapters to Build Trust in Science

    Dear Mid-Atlantic Chapter Leaders,

I am writing today to invite Sigma Xi Chapter Leaders to attend a Zoom Meeting with me, Dan Rubenstein, and Jaime Vernon as a call to "re-energize our chapters" as champions of trust in science. As Dr. Rubenstein discussed in the latest issue of American Science, "Sigma Xi can play a significant role in rebuilding trust in science as an enterprise that can create knowledge that can transform people’s lives.  The way to do so is through compelling ’Story Telling’, but we need the scientific champions who can reach out to local communities where they are known and respected"

Please let me know if you--a Sigma Xi Chapter Leader, or someone designated by one of the chapter leaders can attend at either of the two times below. We will pick one of these that has the most support and will have our meeting then.

Please respond back to me directly at goodd@vt.edu letting me know your availability on Wednesday March 4th during the following two times:

    11:30-12:30

    12:30-1:30

Please also provide me with your chapter affiliation, and your role in the chapter's leadership.

    Thanks,

    As always,

    Debby

  • Seeking New Chapter Leaders!

    Hello Members of Sigma Xi,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to invite members who may be interested in serving on the Executive Committee of our local Sigma Xi chapter.

Our chapter is currently seeking volunteers to serve as Treasurer, Secretary, and President-Elect. Until recently, the chapter was managed by only two officers, which made it difficult to sustain operations and programming. As a result, we have been unable to host regular activities over the past couple of years. Thus, filling these Executive Committee roles is essential for revitalizing the chapter and continuing Sigma Xi’s mission of fostering scientific research and collaboration within our community.

I would very much welcome the opportunity to build a new leadership team. If we are unable to fill these roles, the chapter may be forced to close, which I hope we can avoid with your help.

If you are curious about what service on the Executive Committee involves, or would simply like to have an informal conversation before deciding, I would be very happy to set up a time to chat. Please feel free to reach out directly to me with questions, expressions of interest, or nominations (including self-nominations).

Thank you for considering supporting our chapter and the broader Sigma Xi community.

    Warm regards,
    Karen Sweazea
