Dear Colleagues,
It is time to think about nominating new members and promoting Associate members for the Vanderbilt Chapter of Sigma Xi. It is incumbent upon us to extend the honor of society membership to our eligible colleagues. By doing so, we give back to the community that supported, inspired, and recognized our own research achievements. Moreover, inducting new members into the Society is vital for furthering Sigma Xi’s mission, which is to:
To enhance the health of the research enterprise, foster integrity in science and engineering, and promote the public’s understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition.
So please help to make our Chapter a strong one by encouraging your colleagues, postdocs, and students to become members of Sigma Xi. Especially keep in mind undergraduate and graduate students who are involved in research projects. These projects do not need to have been published to qualify the student for nomination as an Associate member. Presentation of the research results at a local or national meeting is adequate. As long as a member thinks that the student shows potential for a career in science it is sufficient to qualify him/her for nomination to membership. Only active members that is those who have their dues paid up, may nominate new members or recommend Associate members for promotion. I have attached the nomination form and criteria for membership. Please fill out the form and return it to me (along with the nominee’s CV or other supporting material) at the address below by February 27th. Type directly on the form I am sending you, Do not send me a pdf.
We have about 110 active members in the Vanderbilt Chapter. If only a small percentage of us nominated a qualified person, we could have a great recruiting year!
There are many members of our Chapter who are inactive. If you know any inactive members, please encourage them to reactivate their membership. They may contact me at ben.danzo@vanderbilt.edu concerning how to do this.

NOMINATION FOR MEMBERSHIP
Type of Membership
Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination and is conferred in one of two ways. Please indicate on the front of this form for which type of membership this nominee should be considered.
Full Membership is conferred upon any individual who has shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science or engineering. The Committee on Qualifications and Membership generally requires at least two first-authored, refereed papers or patents, one of which can be a Ph.D. thesis. Life experience is also considered in some instances. For nomination to Full Membership, either attach a CV or résumé OR provide a separate attachment with the following information:
• Education: Institution(s), date(s), degree(s)
• Professional Positions: Institution(s), date(s), position title(s)
• Publications: Titles, authors, dates, source(s) (journal name, thesis, etc.)
Associate Membership is available to any individual who has, through initial research achievement in a field of pure or applied science, shown an aptitude for research, as evidenced by independent investigation ordinarily resulting in a written report or presentation at a national or local scientific meeting. Associate membership is offered to encourage young investigators, for example, undergraduate and graduate students, with promise to continue careers in research. For nomination to Associate Membership, attach a brief statement regarding the nominee’s involvement in research and potential research aptitude.
Promotion to Full Membership is conferred upon any individual who, previously elected as an Associate Member, now meets the requirements for Full Membership as stated above. For promotion to Full Membership, either attach a CV or résumé OR provide a separate attachment with the information listed under Full Membership above.

Each nominator must be an active (dues paid) Member of Sigma Xi. This form may be submitted with only one nominator, as a chapter officer or a member of the Committee on Qualifications and Membership may act as a second nominator. Individuals who do not know a Full or Associate Member to act as a nominator may contact: ben.danzo@vanderbilt.edu to request the name of a Vanderbilt Chapter officer or member who would be willing to review the nomination.
