The University of Minnesota Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is an honor society that has been proudly serving our area since 1896. Our chapter is initiating an exciting new scholarship program for college students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The purpose of the Sigma Xi Student Scholarship is to encourage and support the ongoing development of future scientists and up to twenty scholarships will be awarded each year to qualified new student members to our chapter (at either the Associate or Full member level). These students are our future. Each student candidate is expected to meet the qualifications for membership into Sigma Xi, as active membership is a qualification of the award.
This new scholarship is a one-time cash award of $200, which can be used to offset the membership and initiation fees for the first year for the nominee ($50) or any other purpose of their choosing.
This scholarship will provide more than enough funds to pay for their first year's membership in the organization. This award represents formal recognition as well as a direct form of encouragement and support as students continue their studies. Additionally, new student members have the honor of having been accepted to one of the most prestigious honor societies in academe and able to participate in mentorship, Grants in Aid and other programs of the organization.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?
Students should contact their faculty or existing members of Sigma Xi in order to get faculty support for their application.
We are asking faculty, researchers, directors of undergraduate and graduate study to work with your star students, having each student complete the Sigma Xi application form and submit this along with a supporting letter from at least one sponsoring advisor, research director or faculty member. Faculty/advisor-sponsors do not have to be current members of Sigma Xi.
Just return the form and letter as PDF attachments to sigmaxi@umn.edu with the Subject “Sigma Xi Student Membership Application.” Membership invitations will be made to individual students once our Membership Committee has made their recommendation. Upon receipt of the student's first year membership fee and initiation fee ($50), their membership certificate will be sent. Each Spring the announcement of Scholarship winners will be made formally at our Annual Meeting and checks will be sent. The winners are not required to attend this meeting.
