Dear Sigma Xi colleagues,
On behalf of the FIU Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, I wish to invite promising FIU graduate students to apply for Sigma Xi membership.
Sigma Xi, founded in 1886, is one of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world. Today, Sigma Xi has nearly 60,000 members in over 500 Chapters. Recent presidents of Sigma Xi have included Nobel laureate Frederick Robbins, National Medal of Science winner Kumar Patel, presidential science advisor Neal Lane, and National Science Foundation Director Rita Colwell.
Graduate students at FIU have the opportunity for their first year membership in Sigma Xi to be paid by the University Graduate School. This is the fourth year the Graduate School has made this generous gesture. Membership is by nomination with the endorsement of two current members. If two Sigma Xi members are not available in the department to sign the form, please email the completed form along with the student’s CV and the chapter officers can sign the nomination form. Some graduate students may be eligible for Full Membership, others for Associate Membership. To qualify for full membership the student needs to be the primary author on at least two different articles published in a refereed journal, patents, or refereed monographs (theses and dissertations do not count). To qualify for associate membership the student needs to have conducted independent investigation and written a report concerning their research.
Please submit nominations by February 1, 2020 so that the new student members are able to attend the FIU Chapter Annual Meeting and New Member Induction Ceremony in early March 2020.
