Abstract:  Supernova explosions have wide ranging effects in the universe. To start, an overview of the life and death of stars will be given, with emphasis on the end stage and explosion. The causes and effects of the explosion process will be examined. Then observational and modelling work on supernovae carried out at the University of Calgary will be reviewed.

Bio: Denis Leahy graduated from the University of British Columbia in a PhD in Physics in 1980.  He completed his master in Physics in 1976 at UBC and his BSc in Physics at the University of Waterloo in 1975. From 1980-82, he worked as an NRC Research Associate in X-ray Astronomy at Marshall Space Flight Center.  He has been a faculty member at UofC since 1983.  His research areas are observations, data analysis, and computer modeling of high energy astrophysics focusing on supernovae and their remnants, X-ray binaries, and neutron stars.
