Please join us for a Q & A session with Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society Distinguished Lecturer Jim O’Connor, a research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Portland, Oregon. His primary research focus is landscape evolution, mainly involving rivers and floods. He’s also interested in the intersection of landscapes and people, and the history of those interrelations. He’s a fellow of the Geological Society of America and has written numerous scientific articles, monographs, and general-audience features about floods, rivers, glaciers, and the history of geology. He majored in geological science at University of Washington and earned M.S. and PhD degrees at University of Arizona. Since 1991, he has worked at the U.S. Geological Survey, intent on improving understanding of the processes and events that shape the remarkable and diverse landscapes of our planet.
