Session Objectives:

1. Understand the health effects of climate change at individual and population levels.

2. Participate in raising awareness and educating peers as well as community members on policies related to climate change.

3. Appreciate the complexities and diversity of approaches to lead change on environmental issues.

There is a growing awareness that anthropogenic climate change and the air and water pollution associated with massive consumption of fossil fuels pose major threats to global public health. It is clear that without urgent definitive action on the part of world governments there will be a mounting toll of illness, injury, and death. In his lecture, Dr. Snyder will explore aspects of health affected by global warming and pollution, including population displacement, heart disease and stroke, cognitive decline, infectious disease, developmental disorders, and threats to medicainfrastructure.

Bruce D. Snyder, MD, is Clinical Professor of Neurology, Emeritus, University of Minnesota Medical School, and former Chair, Department of Neurology, HealthPartners,  Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Snyder recently retired from the practice of neurology after 43 years.  A graduate of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, he began his career aa faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, ultimately serving as Chair of Neurology at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center (now Regions Hospital) and as Associate Professor of Neurology.  Subsequently, Dr. Snyder left academia to practice with the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology, and then joined the HealthPartners Department of Neurology, where he became departmental chair. Dr. Snyder has written over 90 scientific papersbook chapters, and review articles. He is a Clinical Professor of Neurology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Neurologic Association, and he has served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Snyder works with several environmental organizations, including the North Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, where he is a member of the Executive Committee and the Clean Air and Renewable Energy Committee;  Fresh Energy; and Physicians for Social Responsibility.  Dr. Snyder is directing his efforts toward building awareness of climate change as a major threat to public health.  He enjoys hiking, biking, and witnessing the peace and beauty of Minnesotas lakes and trails, which he hopes to help preserve for all our children and grandchildren.
