University of California-Berkeley

Welcome to the University of California, Berkeley Chapter of Sigma Xi community page!

The Berkeley Chapter members include undergraduate and graduate students, full- and part-time faculty and staff, and professional scientists and engineers.  The Chapter was recognized at the 2006 national Sigma Xi Annual Meeting for our efforts encouraging diversity in the scientific research community. The main objective of the Chapter is to encourage development of and recognize high-quality scientific and engineering research especially among undergraduate and graduate students. To this end, we nominate/promote undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty and professional scientists to both Associate and Full membership in the Society as members of our Chapter. If you are interested in being nominated or promoted from Associate to Full member, email an officer. Our flagship program is our Chapter’s Grants-in-Aid-of-Research (GIARs). For general information on this program, see "Berkeley Chapter GIAR Program" in the library. Any UCB science or engineering student, or student at another SF Bay Area college or university, may apply for a Berkeley Chapter GIAR. Sigma Xi membership is not a prerequisite. Our next GIAR program will open in spring 2023.

We encourage our students to apply to the National GIAR program. We also encourage our undergraduate members to attend and present a research poster at the Undergraduate Research Conference held each year in conjunction with Sigma Xi’s National Annual Meeting.

Member feedback and suggestions for new programs and activities are always welcome!
